Noah and I spent most of Saturday in the ER. Thursday night he came into our room complaining his legs hurt. We figured he just had a charley horse or growing pains and sent him back to bed. He got up Friday morning refusing to walk. He wouldn't put any weight on his legs. I finally got him to walk independently, but on his tip toes and with a lot of complaing. Again we just figured he had had a charley horse, his legs were sore and he was over-reacting as he tends to do.It didn't get any better. Saturday morning he again refused to walk. His calves were hurting him very badly. We called the dr's office and the nurse there couldn't come up with anything so told us to go to the ER so they could do more tests.
I took him to a Prompt Care center first, hoping they would just give us a stronger muscle relaxer and send us home. Instead, they said we did need to go to the ER.
So we headed to the ER, were quickly put in a room and seen by the doctors. They wanted to run some blood tests and do some x-rays. Noah got an IV so they could easily draw a lot of blood. He hated that, but the nurse did an awesome job! Once prick and she had it. He barely has a mark today--no bruise at all.
We were taken to get a x-rays of his hips and lower legs too.
Finally the nurse brought in an iv bag to give Noah fluids. And she ordered him a cheeseburger. All the while he was off and on complaining about the iv and the scratchy clothes, but was easily distracted by the obnoxious cartoons on tv.
The doctor came back in and told us they got the blood results back which were "interesting". Everything was good, except for one which showed an elevated CPK level. Normally it's between 55 and 170. Noah's was 2148. This indicated an inflamation of the muscles. It was probably related to the fever he had had a few days earlier in the week. The official diagnosis was viral myositis. He just needed to remain hydrated and rest. As long as we could do that at home, we were free to go.
So we got home shortly before 3. Already Noah's legs were feeling better. You could squeeze them and he didn't flinch. Today he is feeling much better. He still won't completely flatten his feet, but he is getting around much better. I am constantly forcing him to drink, reminding him he doesn't want to go back to the hospital.
We will go to his pedi tomorrow to recheck those levels--sorry buddy another "shot". At least this got him out of his allergy testing for tomorrow, and probably his kindy immuzations Tuesday!
poor little buddy!
